THURSDAY 20TH MARCH 2014

Jar Fed was back in action! Sharing the love around the office, Allan dipped his hand into the jar. Ben wanted redemption for last times pick, which wasn’t technically his fault because all restaurants in the jar are ones we have handpicked and want to go too (By word or mouth or reputation)! Unfortunately (or maybe on a general day fortunately) for Ben, Allan’s desk is closer and didn’t involve moving!

GAZI !!

We were excited, it was a warm Autumn’s night and we were happy to get out into the city! Make the most of good weather before winter is upon us!

Studying the menu we noticed some interesting choices, in particular, lamb brains! neither of us have tried them before and lamb isn’t usually Elaine’s cup of tea, infact she out of the blue stated…. “I don’t eat lamb” what do you mean, you don’t eat lamb? The Jar Fed roll is very random and works because we are both open to trying new things! Turns out rather than she doesn’t eat lamb, she prefers not too.  So the roll would be interesting!! Our Jar Fed judge Michael said if we wished to be brave we could have an extra indulgence!

ENTREE

#2 POPCORN Tarama Butter

image

Popcorn? As in popcorn chicken? Nope Popcorn as in POPCORN. Elaine was in heaven, she thought it was delicious and fresh, perhaps more as a bar snack, however amazing none the less. I wasn’t as convinced!

B          No                         5            No

As soon as we rolled popcorn, we looked at each other and immediately knew what one another was thinking! we were going to order another entree! Maybe it would be something unique, like the lamb brains!!

Roll for second entree: #7 Cheese (Syka Saganaki: figs, honey, mustard seeds)

image

Yummo! Saganaki is delicious so I was certainly excited to experience this combination! It did not disappoint! The fig bought down the sharpness of the cheese, the honey was sweet and the combination left you wanting more!

SOUVLAKAKIA SMALL SOUVAS

Elaine – #4 Crab (soft shell, mint, coriander, honey, mayonnaise)

Bez – #1 Chicken (chips, parsley, onion, mustard mayo)

image

Hang on a minute, thats a chicken souva and ….. a falafel souva? or Kolokythokeftedes (Zucchini & peas, goat curd, chips, coriander, mint, onion) on their menu, Oopsy, however a crab souva was delivered swiftly to our table!

The chicken with chips and mustard mayo was nice, the flavours went well together, however the bread was a little thick and maybe a touch too much chicken, if the sauce wasn’t covering the chicken it was a tad dry. I was a fan, but Elaine wasn’t.

Kolokythokeftedes (Vego Souva)

I was scared of rolling this one and I was happy I didn’t! It was dry and needed a lot more sauce vs vegetarian mix. We tasted it, as it was a mistake order, but not to our liking!

Crab Souva

The Crab arrived quickly and we got to try and extra one so we couldn’t complain too much!! The crab was fresh and crispy, exactly what you want from a soft shell crab!

WOOD FIRE GRILL

There were 6 “Main” type meals to choose from. Following the entrees and souvas we realised we ordered way too much food, but we pushed on through!

Whole New Zealand Flounder with Walnut Dressing

image

Wow! The fish was so light and flavoursome, the slight dressing with parsley was so tasty. I loved my first bite. Elaine wasn’t as blown away, she had the bottom of the fish and when she tasted the top where the concentration of the sauce was she understood my reaction!

To go with the fish –

Beetroot Salad (Roasted, pearl barley, hommus, red onion)

image

That was one of the best salads both Elaine and myself have tried! It was amazing and certainly worth heading to Gazi to try for yourself! Who would have thought, a salad would score a 10 each!

DESSERT

We were full! What is that saying?!…. Full to pussys bow ! That was us! Could we skip dessert, on a normal night, YES, but this was Jar Fed ! It certainly would not seem right, and dessert goes in another stomach, right?!

So when we were asked, we sure would take a look at the dessert menu!

#2 – Risogalo Jar (Grilled pineapple, popcorn & coconut sorbet, muscavado mousse, puffed rice, almonds)

image

Of all the deserts, this looked like my least favourite on paper, Elaine however thought this sounded amazing. It was not. It was an odd combination the coconut sorbet and the mousse were smooth, but the almonds tasted like a dry spice. That’s how best we could explain it. Elaine was sad because her expectations after reading the menu and eating all the other dishes were so high. It just didn’t compare to the other courses!

She was actually thinking of writing a letter (or perhaps in this day and age, an email!) to let management, aka George Calombaris know how disappointed she was with the dessert offering!

The percentage of people who say they are going to write a letter vs people who actually do, is probably really low. So I suspect there will be no letter. However I don’t think Gazi pulls in the crowds because of their dessert menu.

WHAT ABOUT THE LAMB BRAINS ?

Despite being, for lack of a better word, weirded out, by the thought of brains. We had to try them ! yes, ANOTHER entree! and this certainly does explain why we were so FULL!!

image

This is probably our first really unusual menu choice! and we didn’t even roll it! We were both scared to try them and wondered if we could eat them?! is it mind over matter?! It most certainly is!

Think too much about it, and you’ll most likely psych yourself out! They were actually delicious, creamy and combined with the leek and grapes were quite simply YUM!

          Order?              /10              Again?

E           No                 8                   No

B           No                 8           Maybe! Probably not.

Overall, we had an amazing Greek feast and a feast it was! The downside was the noise, its busy (I’d imagine everyday!) so it was quite loud! Its very funky with upside down pots hanging from the ceiling and an open kitchen.

You can stop off for a quick snack or bite to eat, perhaps a drink, the drinks menu & cocktails list is quite impressive or stay for a substantial meal.

Maybe even run into George and get a photo!

           Overall                  Back

           Score /10              Soon?

E            7.5                  Absolutely!

B            8.5                  Absolutely!
