$ Quan 88, 217 Barkly Street, St Kilda

Life was getting in the way of Jar Fed! But that’s OK, its the way it is sometimes, so our little hobby (we can call eating at restaurants a hobby right?) took a back seat for a few weeks! It just means in the future, we have an excuse to do make up Jar Feds! and lets face it, we are going to be a lot keener on heading outside when its not so freezing!

This brisk winters night we headed to St Kilda to rate some Vietnamese cuisine.

Vietnamese has exploded over Melbourne, there was always a good selection on Victoria Street, but now its everywhere! Quan 88 in St Kilda is another branch of Quan 88 that was already in Richmond.

Prawn Crackers

Seriously who doesn’t love themselves some prawn crackers! You can luck upon some awesome ones and these were those! Freshly cooked, not oily and delicious! Cannot go wrong!

Elaine would have liked some soy sauce to go with hers, is that an Irish thing? or am I missing out?, plain jane prawn crackers for me thanks!

#4 – Vietnamese Spring Rolls (Prawn, Pork, Chicken, Vegetarian or Combination)

We got a combination! They were spring rolls, which again, its hard to go wrong. They were tasty, but would be rush back for these or would we talk about them to friends? No. Nothing stand out about them.

This was by far the biggest menu we’d come across! 110 choices!

Elaine – #32 – Rice Vermicelli with Braised Prawns

Not exactly the best dish to roll on a cold winters night! At least the prawns were warm! Rice vermicelli is definitely more of a summer dish, but it was fresh and tasty and the prawns were cooked to perfection. There were a few sprigs of mint but nothing that delivered a WOW flavor.

Bez – #92 – Prawn with Honey Sauce

We have a knack for rolling seafood dishes that’s for sure! I was a little disappointed because I suspected honey prawns meant the Chinese style honey prawns, straight up fried prawns in honey sauce. Elaine was thinking more of a honey prawn stir-fry style dish.

As you can see Australian-Chinese honey prawns were served!

The prawns were delicious and actually quite large, but there is only so much you can eat before feeling a bit sick. A couple of them with some veggies or rice to tone down the sweetness would be much more appetizing.

          Order?              /10              Again?

E          Yes                 5                   No

B           No                 5                   No

Three out of the five desserts on offer were fried! Banana, pineapple and fried ice-cream.

Following a very sickly main course, we had a Jar Fed First…. NO DESSERT !

We have in the past not felt like dessert but still ordered because it was a part of the rules, but tonight we bent them, I couldn’t image dessert blowing our mind and changing our overall score.

           Overall                  Back

           Score /10              Soon?

E            4                     No, too much competition

B            4                     No, too much competition

It is always a little disappointing when a place doesn’t meet our expectations, we both love Vietnamese cuisine! Elaine summed it up well, the best way to describe this was “food-court food”.

The staff were lovely, its quite a large space which was full on a Tuesday night so they must be doing something right, but with so many options around, it makes for tough competition and if we were choosing dinner this wouldn’t be first on the list.

The luck of the Jar !
