$$ Radio Mexico, Carlisle Street, St Kilda

Pay week rolled around quickly ! Which was nice because we had money in our bank accounts, but also because it was Jar Fed time. We were once again excited, however when it came time to pull out the restaurant, suddenly nervous! It was my (bez’s) turn to pick!

I do love Mexican and had been to the restaurant, only twice before, both times I’d gotten tacos, nachos and corn, tonight would be different! Even if one of us had dined before, if it wasn’t a regular haunt, some places were a must for the Jar!

There was a variety of small things to snack on and share and we added the ceviche into the entree category. In total 14 potential entrees!

Sometimes there are MUST HAVE items on the menu, at Radio Mexico, its the corn, you can’t go and not experience the corn, you’d be a fool! So I had already decided that whatever we roll, we should also fit in some corn.

Our first roll – # 3 – Elotes 2 Piece Serve (Corn on the cob street style)

WE GOT THE CORN! (pause to drool at the picture)

B          Yes                10                  Yes

I was stoked that number 3 was corn! However as I mentioned I was already sold, the corn was a given, so did it really count as our roll for entree? Jar Fed was about trying new things, so I didn’t feel it did and what’s another entree to share!

Roll for another: # 2 – Escabeche – Pickled Jalapenos, Onion & Carrot

Oh gosh, an awkward pause and glance at each other, should we have just stuck with the corn? I am not a massive fan of jalapenos, onion or carrot, so it was going to be hard for this dish to wow me! Elaine was a little more optimistic, however this was the idea of Jar Fed, try new things, so we shrugged and ordered!

The dish was a little confusing for us, was it a salad? was it supposed to be eaten by itself? or was it meant to be a accompaniment to a dish? We were a little baffled!

We gave it a taste, but it was always an uphill battle for this dish for me, it was edible, not overly spicy but not to my liking. By itself Elaine wasn’t the biggest fan either, however when she put the combination in her taco later she said it definitely added a nice touch!

9 soft shell tacos to randomly select from!

Bez – # 5

  • Pollo (BBQ Chicken, lettuce and avocado salsa)

Elaine – # 4

  • Cochinita Pibil (Slow cooked free range pork carnitas with frijoles, red onion and jalapeno pickles and salsa arbol)

The Pollo (Chicken Taco) was amazing, light, flavoursome, fresh, the perfect combination of ingredients. Elaine wasn’t as impressed with the Cochinita Pibil (Pork Taco), she felt the frijoles dominated the flavour and took away from the slow cooked pork. With the Pickled Jalapenos, Onion & Carrot added from entree, she would score the taco a 6 (slightly higher).

PINCHOS (Main meals designed to share)

Roll number # 1 – Pork Belly Al Pastor – Oven roasted free range pork belly with pineapple salsa and served with green rice

Elaine nearly jumped out of her seat and did an Irish happy dance (I’d imagine her doing a riverdance type thing, kicking her legs up in the air) at the roll !! Pork belly is one of her all time favourites!

Elaine was not disappointed, she loved the combination, said it felt simple, something you could cook at home! although getting the crisp crackling might not be so easy to achieve! As for me, well, pork is my least favourite meat, it was nice, but not something I’d rave about. If you are a pork fan the crackling was done to perfection.

A few interesting combinations, dark chocolate mousse with a berry compote and chili praline, sounds interesting! spiced mexican coffee! Excited to see what we rolled!

Our Roll – # 5 – Fresas – Macerated strawberries with homemade crema and meringue

It was a very summery dessert! Not too heavy and the flavours were light and fresh. Its a good choice if you don’t want anything to weigh you down but you want a little sweet something!

Overall, would we come back? absolutely! There is so many combinations on the menu to try! Its still trendy, maybe come the cooler months it might be easier to get a table, if you go outside peak, a little early or a little late, you shouldn’t have any problems, but it was quite busy when we left around 8.30PM and a queue to get a table!

If you had a small wait, it would definitely be worth it! The food is super quick and the service was great. It’s a great catchup with friends place, where you can try a variety of things because of the tapas style of menu. Its very fresh and doesn’t leave you feeling heavy and bloated, which is awesome for the summer months!! You can eat as little or as much as you like! The food is deceptively filling!

           Overall                  Back

           Score /10              Soon?

E            7                  Definitely!

B            8                  Definitely!

We will be filling our belly’s again very soon!
