THURSDAY 13TH FEBRUARY 2014

After a few hiccups and delayed starts, it was finally time to experience our first jarfed adventure! We both weren’t in the office together until after 4pm, so we had our fingers crossed for a restaurant that did not require a booking! We were in luck ! First pick of the jar bought out MEATBALLS … more formally known as The Meatball & Wine Bar, Melbourne. Home of the Whoopie Mac dessert (and of course various types of meatballs!)

Venturing into the city, is actually quite pleasant on a Monday night. Traffic was a breeze and we scored a rock star park! The Meatball & Wine Bar was bustling, after a slightly more than ideal wait to be served we were escorted to seats on one of the back communal tables.

The Meatball & Wine Bar menu, is available online, so before we left work, Michael had a quick look over it, obviously we had to have balls & all for main course and a whoopie mac for dessert, but where did the other food fit in? As far as jarfed goes, it was a pretty easy menu, roll for entree (which was pretty much everything else on the menu), roll for which ball, sauce & sotto palle (apparently that’s Italian for what your balls sit on) and for dessert, roll for which cookie & ice-cream!

The first ever roll …. Entree… Random Number THREE

TRUFFLE SALAMI

(Its dark but its salami on a wooden board!)

Both Elaine & Myself (Bez) do like salami so we weren’t too disappointed with our roll, I was deep down hoping for jerky, as that is something I have never tasted, but as we were a little scared of the randomness that could eventuate, this was a good start to the night!

The meal came to our table, and it was as it said on the menu, truffle salami, served with bread. We like salami, but by itself it didn’t excite us, it wasn’t bad, it certainly was delicious salami, teamed with some cheese or tomato or as part of a platter of tasty treats it could be amazing, but by itself a little boring.

It was time to move onto MAIN COURSE, with 5 different types of balls, 3 sauces and 5 sotto palle, we assessed the menu and figured no combination would be completely wrong, so we rolled away!

Bez – 5, 1, 1 =

  • Veg Balls, Red Italian Tomato Sauce on Italian Beans

Elaine – 1, 2, 5 =

  • Pork Balls, White Creamy Sauce on Something Veg (Broccoli)

Both dishes were a winning combination, I was concerned the veg balls with chickpeas, could be dry, but much to my delight they were delicious, light and fresh! Elaine was very happy with the pork combination, the pork is mixed with fennel, sage and orange and creates a very unique flavour that isn’t found on your plate daily.

The sotto palle again was nothing something we would usually order, we weren’t even sure what Italian Beans were! Turns out they are white cannellini beans! Elaine did ask where the pasta was, while she was digging around the plate…. ah sorry you got broccoli instead!

The meals are not overly large, three ball size is perfect you are left full and satisfied and not overly stuffed!

The Whoopie Mac’s come in 4 different cookie flavours, with 4 different ice-cream flavours and can be mixed and matched to your liking ! I have been lucky enough to taste the chocolate hazelnut ice-cream in the past which was AMAZING so I knew we wouldn’t be disappointed !

We rolled for the cookie: GINGER

We rolled for the ice-cream: VANILLA BEAN

We couldn’t have been luckier, I’m not sure the other ice-cream combinations would have gone with ginger, although maybe they would! The vanilla bean ice-cream was delicious, one of the best vanilla flavours I’ve had in awhile and went amazingly well with the ginger cookie!

Our overall experience at The Meatball & Wine Bar, was fantastic, following the small delay at the start to be seated, the service was excellent, the ambiance was warm and inviting, or as Elaine would say, “this place is class” (thats irish talk for awesome) and the food was all fresh and delicious.

As the first Jarfed restaurant we were unsure of our ratings! And clearly did not take the best photos! Sorry about that! The Meatball & Wine Bar is dimly lit which creates a nice atmosphere, but not the best photos! Now we have a baseline to go on for the next time! We are both very pleased with our first outing!
