MONDAY 2ND JUNE 2014

** SPECIAL EDITION JARFED **

This is our first special edition! The Smith was offering a Monday night SEAFOOD FRENZY and who are we to resist such an offer! $50 all you can eat seafood buffet!

Special edition meant there would be no rolling for meal selections tonight, however we must try everything on offer! Yes, that did include a selection of various oysters!

OYSTERS

Freshly shucked oysters with Champagne Dressing / Crab Salad & Ponzu / Steamed with Soy & Ginger

Oysters are not everyones first choice of seafood! I have given them a try in the past with hilarious facial expressions! But tastebuds do change, so sometimes you have to revisit these things!

We tried the champagne dressing first, they were very fresh and I think with oysters that’s a must! They were interesting, it wasn’t bad, wasn’t bad…. then a hit of sea salt, not so sure !

We then tried the oysters with crab salad & ponzu, the crab salad ontop was delicious, I thought they mixed well together and were quite yum, Elaine was still on the fence, would we order them from a menu, probably not.

Lastly the steamed oysters with soy and ginger, we both agreed these were our favourite, the oysters being steamed aka cooked made a big difference to the taste! These probably would be something we would order and eat again.

KINGFISH & SEARED TUNA

Kingfish sashimi with mango & coconut cream and seared tuna with green papaya salad & wasabi dressing

A selection of colder dishes were ready on arrival, along with the champagne dressing oysters, there was kingfish sashimi and seared tuna.

The kingfish sashimi with mango & coconut cream was fresh and simple. The mango was not overpowering, it was a simple accompaniment that let the fish speak for itself.

The seared tuna with green papaya salad & wasabi dressing, was quite tasty, however we both agreed, it was the worst dish of the night (aside from oysters). The problem was that the pieces of tuna were too large, an odd complaint, yes! but it made picking them up with the forks supplied difficult, they weren’t bite size!

PRAWN COCKTAILS

Mini prawn cocktails with avocado & green chili

It had been awhile since I’ve had the humble prawn cocktail, a classic, that didn’t disappoint, the cocktail sauce had a really nice zing and the lettuce was crisp, was always bound to be a winning combination.

SOFT SHELL CRAB TORTILLA

Soft Shelled crab tortillas with avocado and black beans

image

The photo does not do this justice whatsoever! This is certainly the best soft shell crab tortilla we have had in Melbourne! There was the perfect amount of crab (we have found it common for a tortilla to be over filled!) The tortilla was fresh and just that little bit smokey, the sauce was amazing and zesty. Elaine scored half a point down because she wasn’t sure about the black beans. This is certainly a dish that you would crave and head back to The Smith for, infact, anyone free tonight?!

TEMPURA ROCKLING

Once again, let down by the picture we could capture! The bun was sweet and so fresh, the rocking was simple, fried, not oily at all. The ingredients were well complimented and they didn’t try and add too much. Yummo.

BBQ KING PRAWN SKEWER

Simply cooked on the BBQ these sea horse shaped prawn skewers were delightful. Another classic combination chili and garlic, why try and create the wheel again, as the saying goes, when you already have perfection on a plate!

ROAST WILD BARRAMUNDI

Roast wild barramundi with bok choy & black bean dressing

Fantastic combination! the crispy skin barramundi was simply delicious. Bok choy was a great choice of greens with an Asian style black bean dressing, which didn’t take over the dish. If you were into fish, we would highly recommend going and getting a full size serve!

ATLANTIC SALMON

Seared Atlantic salmon with tomato and basil

Salmon can be a little bit like steak, in the sense that people like it cooked different ways. Elaine and I both prefer our salmon to be seared and quite pink on the inside, this was a little overcooked for our liking and therefore a little bit dry, it wasn’t bad, but compared to other dishes on the night, it wasn’t a highlight.

Because it was a special night at The Smith, everyone received a glass of Laurent Perrier on arrival and there was beer tasting throughout the night.

The Smith describe themselves as Elegantly relaxed not flashy; smart yet casual, and that is a fairly accurate description. They have created a warm sophisticated atmosphere, even on a cold winters night, it felt cosy inside. The place has a really good feel to it and the staff were all lovely and attentive.

For $50 this was an absolute bargain. On an average night they do offer a la carte and a chefs selection menu, which all sound delicious and if this is the buffet standard then we have no doubt all the food would be amazing !
