WEDNESDAY 29TH OCTOBER 2014

Saigon Sally (sister to Hanoi Hannah) is a new-age Vietnamese style restaurant just off the Windsor end of chapel street. Its very cool and trendy. We had both been before but were super excited to go in a Jar-Fed capacity and see what dishes we got to try!

# 3 – BANH MI

Pulled Pork, Pickles, Cucumber, Siracha & Hoisin

We received the banh mi after the wagyu tartare had already knocked our socks off, so I think the scores are reflected in this. Was the dish fresh and tasty? yes. But was it something unique and absolutely special? no. It was nice but didn’t have the same wow factor.

#7 -WAGYU TARTARE

Young Coconut, Viet Mint, Kumquat & Puffed Rice Paper

If there is raw food on the menu, no doubt we will roll it!! Elaine had a mini tantrum and sighed… not raw food again !! But we were sticking to our guns and not making any exceptions in the rules, so the wagyu tartare was ordered. We love it when dishes like this blow our little taste buds away! The crackers were fresh and prawny and the meat was delicious, just the right amount of spice! Can’t wait to go back for more!

#5 – PUMPKIN + TOFU

Coconut Roasted Pumpkin, Crisp Tofu, Lemongrass, Taro & Watercress

IMG_9025

Well the point of Jar-Fed is to be more adventurous and try dishes we wouldn’t usually order, so this was right up that alley.  We don’t usually opt for the vegetarian options on menus in normal ordering circumstances, but tonight we would be giving it a go! The dish was again, AMAZING! It had a curry taste with a different style. The pumpkin puree mash was perfect, it was unexpected, as you would have thought you were getting pumpkin pieces from the menu, but we really liked how they mixed things up and this is definitely a dish I would go back specifically for!

#4 – GRILLED OCEAN TROUT

Turmeric, Dill, Mustard Leaf, Ginger, Jalapeño & Banh Hoi

IMG_9027

The grilled ocean trout is again something a little bit different. Its served with a variety of herbs and leaves, of which you make a little trout parcel, with noodles, trout and the special sauce. It was definitely unique and we hadn’t seen a fish dish served up like this before. It was fresh and the fish was cooked to perfection. Not a dish we would get standalone but good with a banquet style meal.

# 4 – BANH BO NUT

Vietnamese Doughnut, Salted Galangal

Caramel & Toasted Coconut Sorbet.

IMG_9032

We both had tried the doughnuts before. But they are delicious so we weren’t going to turn them up! You get 5 little doughnuts which is a pretty big serve for 2 people, but you know, we struggled though and didn’t waste any! A fantastic end to any meal!

HAPPY ENDING!

Cheesecake with blueberry sorbet

IMG_9030

The happy ending is a cute way of Saigon Sally saying tonight’s dessert special. So this dish would rotate and change as they see fit throughout seasons and trends. The night we were there, the dish was a cheesecake with blueberry sorbet and some crumble and jelly and some edible flowers to pretty it up! It had a lot of elements so it was hard to remember them all! After the doughnuts, it wasn’t the best. Great dessert for people with not much of a sweet tooth.

B          Yes                  6                 No

Saigon sally is one of the trendy crew around Melbourne, but with a bonus, you can actually book a table! The atmosphere is fun, the staff are super friendly and the food is amazing.

Absolutely worth a visit!
