Supernormal opened its doors on Flinders Lane, Melbourne, less than a year ago but if the queues on Friday night were anything to go by it has quickly stepped up to the tough competition Flinders Lane offers!

As with the trend, Supernormal doesn’t take bookings for dinner for less than 6 people, but they do have a waiting area where you can get a drink as you wait for your table. They have a banquet, which would be a great value way to sample the menu, it offers a selection of dishes from their six sub menu’s however for Jar Fed our rules state that we roll from each menu!

#2 – Tuna, avocado, apple & wakme

If you’ve been following Jar Fed, you will notice that Elaine has come a long way in a year! From not enjoying raw food menu items to giving them a 9/10 ! Tuna wouldn’t be either of our first choices, I usually find it to be quite a strong flavour but this was delicious. It was a great starter, light and fresh flavours which complimented each other and the sauce bought it all together.

#3 – White cut chicken, cold noodles, sesame, peanuts & chilli oil

On the plates and vegetables menu there are a few interesting dishes, such as ox tail and mussels, so we weren’t excited about rolling the chicken. However that is what can be so great about Jar Fed, a dish we wouldn’t normally order, absolutely blows our taste buds!

This was fantastic, we didn’t expect it to be cold, but it works! The chicken was tender and the noodles were cooked to perfection. Generally silence at the table is us loving the dish and this was the case, we were savouring the flavours and would have been happy to have this as a main meal!

DUMPLING AND BAO

 

 

#6 – Duck Bao – Twice cooked duck, vinegar & plum sauce – Duck Leg

We were divided on our thoughts on the duck bao. We both loved the presentation and do it yourself method, it meant the bao was fresh. I thought the bread was light and fluffy, the duck was crispy and the sauce was sweet, which all together made for the best bao that i’ve ever tasted! Elaine however felt that the bread was too thick and the sauce was too sweet, she would prefer a hoisin sauce with duck.

MEAT AND FISH

 

 

#3 – Slow cooked Szechuan lamb to share, spring onion pancake, coriander paste

The lamb was cooked well, it fell off the bone and the sauce was nice, but after such highs from the other dishes, this just felt a bit average and bland. It tasted a little bit stew-like and seemed like a dish you could easily make at home. It was just lacking any wow factor.

Spring onion pancake & coriander paste

The spring onion pancakes come as an accompaniment to the lamb dish, however they deserve a title of their own! Unfortunately you cannot order these separately because they are AMAZING! Crisp and flavoursome, they are the best spring onion pancakes either of us have ever tasted! The coriander paste is delicious ontop and they would be great on the snacks and appetisers menu!

DESSERT

 

 

Peanut butter parfait, salted caramel & soft chocolate

Supernormal have four desserts along with two fruit bowls. From the moment we walked in we constantly saw the peanut butter parfait delivered to tables, our eyes lit up and jaws dropped, it looked amazing! So when it came time to roll for dessert, we were torn and admit we cheated!

We didn’t roll for dessert, we just had to try the dish we had seen walk past us so many times throughout the night! This dessert is clearly very popular and we wanted to know what all the fuss was about! Its a very rich combination, which makes this a perfect shared dish because you don’t need a lot to get the satisfaction you want from a dessert! If you love peanut butter this is a winner!

Flinders Lane is becoming the who’s who of the Melbourne food world! Supernormal does not disappoint, the space is open and bright and one of the first things I noticed is that the tables are not crammed in to capacity, there is a variety of seating options, larger round tables, some smaller tables and a lot of seating along the bar.

The service was exceptional, we arrived at around 7.30pm and waited approximately 15-20 minutes for a table, which went quickly as we were seated in the waiting zone and were able to order a drink, being a friday night, we weren’t expecting to get a table straight away! Once we were seated we were explained the menu and ordered. The food comes out in the order of the menu, raw, plates & vegetables, dumpling and bao and lastly meat & fish.

At no point did we feel rushed or hurried along for our table. In a lane way so full of competition we had high expectations and Supernormal lives up to them all and makes for a great dinner out in the city.
