Entrecôte is a Parisian steak house that was developed by two friends who had dinner in Paris and were inspired by the very original Le Relais De L’Entrecôte – the famous one-dish Steakhouse.

In French the word entrecôte denotes a premium cut of beef used for steaks. The term may also be used in France to denote the sirloin cut properly known as a contre-filet, being the portion of the sirloin on the opposite side of the bone from the filet, or tenderloin. In Australia, a steak cut from the contre-filet may be called a porterhouse steak.

With this Entrecôte in South Yarra was created, with one main porterhouse steak dish on the menu served with bottomless fries and salad.

ENTREE

 

 

Gougère, chèvre, thyme, honey

There are four entrees on the menu, soup which is difficult to share, oysters which we both don’t like, Caviar and Gougère. So we ordered the Caviar and the Gougère, only to thankfully be told before it was put through that the Caviar was $150 for 30g a tad over our budgets for the night! So that left us with one entree.

A gougère, in French cuisine, is a baked savory choux pastry made of choux dough mixed with cheese. Chèvre is a goats cheese. I am not the biggest fan of goats cheese so these were not to my liking, Elaine liked it but thought the sweeter pastry was a bit odd. Not something we would order again.

It is usual looking around the restaurant and everyone is eating the same dish! At the same time you realise to only have one main dish on the menu (side note: there is more variety on the bar menu) they must be pretty confident in what they are serving.

It is good for the indecisive, the only decision you have to make is how you would like your steak cooked. I ordered mine rare and Elaine medium. They were cooked to perfection and our plates were piled high with crunchy fries, which are bottomless if you could possibly eat anymore!

The steak is paired with entrecôte’s special secret herb butter sauce, which on their instagram has either 14, 18 or 19 ingredients, whichever it is, it does match up nicely with the Grilled Hopkins River Porterhouse. Its very unique and the more you eat it the more you appreciate the combination!

DESSERT

 

 

#2 – Quince & frangipane tart, gingerbread icecream

We rolled for this dessert and yes as luck would have it, it was the one we least wanted to try! The gingerbread ice cream was a little on the soft side and tasted much more like cinnamon than gingerbread. It was freshly made and warm, I quite liked the tart but wasn’t the biggest fan of the ice cream. Elaine thought that it wasn’t special enough something you can buy at a nice bakery.

Mont Blanc – chestnut parfait, manjari chocolate mousse, hazelnuts

We rolled one dessert and choose one dessert. In hindsight one would have been suffice, we were quite full from our steak! This was uniquely presented, but i’m not sure in a good way? The flavours were nice but didn’t blow us away, not anything we would rush back for.

Entrecôte, South Yarras one-dish steakhouse, is it a success? Judging by the amount of people on a chilly Tuesday night, we would have to say yes. The concept is unique to Melbourne and the location opposite the botanical gardens is a fantastic spot in a beautiful old house.

The steak and frites is what people go and come back for and they have created a delicious and unique sauce combination to match the steak. The house is beautiful and would be fantastic for brunch on the weekends as they have two good outdoor balcony and terrace spaces. The brunch menu is also more extensive for those not into steak.
