$$ Vegie Bar, 380 Brunswick St, Fitzroy

We are not even close to vegetarians but we wanted to put a range of restaurants in the Jar, so right from the very start Vegie Bar made the list, with great urban spoon reviews (now zomato!) we figured they could make the vegetable dishes shine!

#4 – Kimchi Tostadas – La Tortilleria corn tortilla topped with smoked organic tofu mince, vegan kimchi and a spicy asian slaw

These were delicious, a little spicy but that gave them some flavour and it packed a punch! Great little starter!

#2 – Temperoni – Our take on the classic pepperoni pizza – rich tomato sugo, vegan mozzarella. thinly sliced smoked black pepper tempeh and a swirl of spicy Sri Racha sauce

Not the greatest pizza to roll, we were hoping for a delicious mushroom or vegetable combination, it baffles us that on vegetarian menus they try to make dishes ‘like’ meat dishes, if we wanted pepperoni we would eat pepperoni! The base was really nice but the soy pepperoni just wasn’t doing anything for us.

#2 – Pumpkin & Mixed Grain Risotto – Roasted butternut pumpkin, char-grilled corn, sugar snap and green peas with fresh dill in a quinoa, black barley and brown rice risotto.

We were happy with this roll however there was probably other dishes on the menu we would have loved to try. We both love a risotto… we felt like this is a great weekday dish, delicious and flavoursome and not the slightest bit naughty. But we went on a friday night and after being ‘good’ all week it didn’t light up our taste-buds!

#4 Sticky Date Pudding – a traditional Australian sticky date pudding, smothered in warm caramel sauce

We were pretty happy we rolled the traditional sticky date pudding! One of the only traditional non vegan, non-raw, non gluten free desserts on the menu! So keen to eat it, we forgot to take a photo (this photo is courtesy of zomato). It didn’t disappoint! We both loved it!

Vegie Bar was pumping on a Friday night ! Super busy and seemed to be a great space! We wondered if we would get a table, turns out they have a great out of the way bar / waiting area so you can have a drink while you wait for a table! It was fantastic.

We didn’t get our ideal food choices which doesn’t help, we think they would make superb pizzas that we didn’t get to try, but that’s the luck of the roll! We felt like it would be great for a mid week treat rather than a special occasion, mainly because at least you wouldn’t feel guilty for eating out mid week, most of the meals are pretty healthy!

It was definitely good value for money and great if you do have those vegetarian/vegan friends or friends with dietary requirements.
