THURSDAY 15TH OCTOBER 2015

Nieuw Amsterdam is described as a classy New York-style bar and eatery, serving creative cocktails and gourmet American diner food. It’s a bit more low key located on Hardware Street which is directly opposite the hustle and bustle of Hardware Lane, so you’d have to know it was there opposed to being wooed by the hawkers outside restaurants on Hardware Lane.

APPETISERS

#6 – Californian Tuna – sesame, cucumber, soy, edamame

IMG_1932

This dish sounded delicious and it was! If anything it was just lacking as Manu would say on my kitchen rules…. THE SAUCE! Perhaps if the sauce was over the top of the fish it would have had more impact but we just didn’t get enough of it! The fish was fresh and sealed beautifully.

MAINS

#3 – Grilled Trevally- pickled mussels, fennel, tomato, smoked paprika

IMG_1936

It didn’t sound exciting on the menu but it was beautifully presented and wow the flavour combination really packed a punch, quite fishy but in a really good way, it was delicious! Points were deducted for the trevally being a tad dry, slighly overcooked, otherwise it would have been 10/10 all round.

THE PITT GRILL

#4- Borrow Dale Pork Ribs -apple, radish & kohlrabi slaw

IMG_1939

Elaine loves her some pork ribs! I on the other hand not the biggest fan, maybe because I haven’t had many but these were delicious, super tasty marinade and the serve was very generous. They teamed up fantastically with the slaw. The scores say it all, we would definitely head back for these!

Home-made real cut potato chips, exactly what Elaine (and the rest of the world loves!) you can’t go wrong and the dipping sauce was so tasty! YUM!

DESSERTS

#4 -Vanilla Donuts – strawberry sugar, jam & cream

IMG_1942

The deconstructed donuts were a novel way of presenting them and if they were reminiscing on scones with jam and cream they did a good job, the donuts were a little doughy and more reminiscent of scones than donuts, so not the best ones we’ve had but edible all the same.

The place has a great warm vibe with all the wooden tables and bar, a few nooks for different groups available. Can really see it bustling for after work drinks & food!

The menu isn’t large so it seems they can concentrate on perfecting what they have! Everything we had was delicious. The service was outstanding and we would definitely recommend a visit!
