After a Jar-Fed hiatus we are back!! and our first stop was Rice Queen in Melbourne’s north. Rice Queen describes their space as a “world of kitsch Asian design where you can forget about the troubles of the day while sipping cocktails, enjoying sakè or nibbling on dishes handpicked from a range of different Asian cuisines”

The menu is all about a shared dining experience with a lot of smaller style dishes available so you can taste an array of flavours. We bought along our friend Catherine to celebrate the return of Jar-Fed.

SMALLER

#4 – Grilled King Oyster mushrooms, eggplant puree, Szechuan seasoning, pickled chili and herbs

IMG_2587

It was beautifully presented and nice enough but we just felt it was lacking something. We are all mushroom lovers but this dish could have been taken to the next level if the mushrooms were char-grilled, it would have given the dish a bit more depth of flavour.

#5 – Caramelized pork bites – twice cooked pork belly served with green nam jim, crispy shallots and garlic chips

Another beautifully presented dish, 10/10 for presentation! If you love pork belly you are not going to go wrong with these, crispy delicious bites, the fresh chili adds a pow in your mouth.

IN-BETWEEN

#1 – Papaya salad with snake beans, cherry tomatoes, peanuts, crispy shallots and fresh herbs in a lime and soy dressing

IMG_2589

This wasn’t a usual salad any of us would order, papaya is one of those ingredients that people either love or hate. This dish was however pleasantly surprising, it was fresh and a great accompaniment to the dishes with a little chilli in.

LARGER

#4 – Market Fish fillets, coconut tom yum sauce, cucumber and tomato salad. Served with steamed rice

IMG_2592

For a dish on the “Larger” menu this was quite small, however perfect for the three of us with three pieces of fish. The flavours worked perfectly together, there was just the right amount of kick. Absolutely delicious!

#6 – Korean DIY tacos – slow roasted Korean style pork served with steamed rice, kimchi, butter lettuce cups and our own homemade ‘ssam’ sauce

IMG_2590

These sounded amazing on the menu and I personally was excited to try them but they just didn’t deliver. Unfortunately there wasn’t anything special about the dish, it could easily be created at home, potentially with more flavour.

SWEET

#4 – Apple and Chai “Sundae” – Compressed granny smith, Chai ice cream and almond crumble

IMG_2593

A few of the desserts sounded amazing. Nobody was overly excited to roll this apple pie sounding dish. We were however pleasantly surprised, it was fresh and tasty and the chai ice-cream worked really well with the apple and crumble. A great ending to the meal!

Whoever is responsible for decorating Rice Queen has done a fantastic job, the place looks amazing. There is a great ambiance and vibe and the wait staff were very attentive and helpful.

The menu is designed to share with lots of little plates, so its great place for a group of friends to meet up for dinner and get to try a variety of delicious dishes!
