Big Boy BBQ describe themselves as Melbourne’s first ‘low and slow’ smoked meat experience and credit themselves for the introduction of American BBQ to Melbourne.

The ribs are not boiled, but rather smoked over Hickory wood. They have 3 restaurants, The City, Richmond and Caulfield which was the one we visited.

SANDWICHES

#6 – The 2 Meat – Saucy pulled chicken and pulled lamb shoulder with lettuce, tomato and BBQ sauce

This isn’t a burger either of us would usually order but we have been pleasantly surprised in the past with dishes. This however was not the case, it was dry even when smothered in BBQ sauce, the bun wasn’t fantastic, overall not a great burger especially for $15.

RIBS

#1 – Kansas City style spice rubbed pork

Elaine loves her ribs and these were beyond disappointing, they were dry, tasteless (especially when warned about being spicy!) they tasted pre-made and to top off the dish the pickles on the side tasted like they were straight out of a supermarket jar and like the burger, the 1/2 serve of ribs for $31 is pretty steep, you’d be expecting a lot more!

SIDES

Special – Mac & Cheese

Mac & cheese is huge at the moment, popping up in restaurants everywhere! This mac & cheese was oily rather than super cheesy and after a few bites made us feel a bit sick.

#2 – Onion strings, crispy fried

These were the saving grace of the night, they were delicious and crispy and we couldn’t get enough of them!

Overall we left pretty disappointed, the restaurant looked cool, it was setup well and the staff were lovely but the food just didn’t deliver, they may claim to be the first to bring the American BBQ to Melbourne but since then a lot of other places have opened and unfortunately their food far surpasses this BBQ.
