Kong is located on Church Street, Richmond and is one of the now many Lucas Group locations which include Chin-Chin, Baby and Hawker Hall.

The Kong BBQ menu is inspired by Korean cuisine and being a part of the Lucas Group we had big expectations!

SMALL

#3 – Mandhu – Wagyu Beef & Kimchi Dumplings with soy vinegar

IMG_3170

Elaine loved this dish, the dumpling itself was really fresh and cooked to perfection, I wasn’t a fan of them coming out pre-soaked in the soy vinegar, I’d prefer to put that on myself and control the amount, but if you love the soy vinegar you will love these.

YAKITORI

#3 – Tsukune – Teriyaki glazed chicken meatballs with garlic & ginger

IMG_3171

Neither of us were excited about this roll, I however was very pleasantly surprised, I thought they were fantastic! Elaine felt like they needed more sauce as they were a bit dry for her liking.

RIBS

#1 – Kalbi beef short rib with pine nut ssamjang & daikon kimchi

IMG_3172

The rib was cooked to perfection and fell off the bone. The accompaniments made it stand out above other ribs available the combination was a winner for both of us, very unique and flavoursome!

A BIT MORE

#2 – Bossam – BBQ cape grim black angus sirloin bulgogi marinated with walnut ssamjang kimchi & lettuce

IMG_3173

This was an odd one, sounded amazing on the menu, but we both felt it was better without the lettuce to wrap it up in, the flavour combo was odd and the lettuce wraps just felt a bit unnecessary. The sirloin itself was delicious with the toppings it came and perfectly cooked.

RICE & NOODLES

#1 – Wood roasted pork belly with soba noodle, nashi & apple soy

IMG_3174

This dish was nice, nothing really stood out about it, pretty standard noodle dish.  Elaine felt the flavours were too sour for her liking and that she had tasted better pork noodle salads at other restaurants, but I thought it was tasty enough to want to order again.

SWEET

#1 – Apple & Walnut Tart with miso butterscotch & Japanese whisky ice-cream

IMG_3175

The apple and walnut tart was delicious the pastry melted in your mouth but the whisky ice-cream was a let down, especially as we had recently tasted very flavoursome whisky ice cream, this was lacking any of that punch.

Overall the flavours of Kong BBQ were very unique and most dishes we loved. The service was great and as we arrived for a nanna dinner we got a table straight away, would we wait 2 hours for a table at peak time?, probably not but if you are around for lunch or early enough to score a table straight away its definitely worth a look!
