Newmarket Hotel is a trendy St Kilda pub serving a Californian inspired menu, which “celebrates the flavours of California with a wink to the south”. Think all the great food from South America, Mexican inspired tacos and Argentinian/Brazilian BBQ meats.

Tonight we welcomed our friend Lucas to pop his Jar-Fed cherry and experience the roll of the jar-fed dice!

STREET FOOD

#3 – Guacamole – w pico de gallo, queso fresco & corn chips

IMG_3287

All our dishes arrived quite quickly in succession, so this one was kind of lost. It was fresh but there was really nothing special about it, something you can easily whip up at home.

ENSALADA

Ceviche of Snapper – w. Avocado & pea purée, grapefruit & mezcal

 IMG_3286

We decided we would choose this dish as it was the standout of the Ensalada menu. For me it was completely lost among the other dishes and didn’t stand out like other ceviche I’ve had, but Elaine and Lucas thought it was delicious.

TACQUERIA

#6 – Quesadilla – w. Spinach, field mushrooms & huitlacoche truffle crema

IMG_3285

Set among the delicious sounding taco menu, this vegetarian quesadilla option was not any of our first pick, it was tasty enough but not a dish any of us would rush to order again, just run of the mill flavours that didn’t really make a lasting impression.

GUARNICIONES

#1 – Bravas – Triple cooked potatoes w. 2 sauces

You can’t really go wrong with patatas bravas and these were no exception, crispy potato deliciousness, YUM!

CHURRASCARIA

#3 – Rib Fillet 350G Grass Fed, O’Connor’s Gippsland

IMG_3290

The rib fillet was perfectly cooked with a slight charred flavour, especially on the end pieces, great quality produce cooked simply.

PLATOS GRANDES

#3 – Grilled Crystal Bay Prawns – Chorizo migas & pedro ximenez

IMG_3288

No better way to show off great produce than to cook them in the simplest way and not drown out the natural flavour. These prawns were grilled, sprinkled with sauce and then left to shine on their own, delicious!

PASTRIES

#3 – Weiss Gianduja Chocolate Cazuela – Salted caramel, hazelnut praline & vanilla ice cream

IMG_3291

Of course we rolled the most expensive dessert on the menu! We were a little underwhelmed when it arrived at the table, being nearly $30 we expected it to be a little bit bigger, however it was the perfect share dessert, rich and sweet.

          Order?              /10          Again?

E        No                   8              Maybe

B        No                   8          Yes (to share)

L        No                   8          Yes (to share)

Overall the food was pretty amazing but the service was terrible, even on an empty Wednesday night it was hard to get anyone’s attention.

We were asked how we would like the food to come out and said when it was ready, however ALL the food arrived at once, every dish within 5 minutes. We would definitely recommend making sure your entree type dishes come out first and the main plates later. It was difficult getting everything at once, dishes like the ceviche and corn chips were lost, they may have scored higher if we had been able to taste them on their own without everything else around them.

The place did have a really good atmosphere and we would all like to go back and give some of the other dishes a try, especially some of the tacos! The overall score probably would have been higher if the service was that little bit better!
