Rare steakhouse is “committed to serving premium quality produce and creating a welcoming environment where customers can savour the flavour of Australian beef at its very best”

There are three Melbourne city locations. We went to Uptown which has the highest zomato rating and were excited for steak on a cold winters night!

TO START

#5 – Grilled Boerewors – 100% Beef Sausage served with BBQ sauce

Not something that either of us would normally order out at a restaurant. It was a bit different but if you like sausages I guess this would be a good option!

STEAKS

#5 – Rump – Grain Fed Black Angus

IMG_3460

We rolled rump which is both of our least favourite cuts of steak. It wasn’t very enjoyable the steak was chewy and Elaine only ate it because she was paying for it! The thickcut chips were pretty tasty but the mushroom sauce had an odd flavour. This is definitely not steak we would go back for when a good pub would have a $12 steak special and would be much tastier than this.

MAINS

#7 – Thyme Gnocchi – with truffled aspargus, broad beans, cherry tomatoes, gruyere cheese and almond beurre noisette

Neither of us were overly excited about rolling the gnocchi, however it turned out to be one of the best dishes of the night. The gnocchi melted in your mouth and the vegetable were crisp and a great contrast. Yum!

SIDES

Mac & Cheese

The mac and cheese was ok, it wasn’t really creamy and cheesy which made it a little bit dry. Not one of the better mac and cheeses available in Melbourne.

DESSERT

#3 – White Chocolate & Raspberry Panna Cotta

IMG_3462

This was an unusual panna cotta because it was set in a cup. The texture wasn’t creamy, it was thick and grainy, very strange. Not a great dessert, we have definitely had much better panna cottas in our time!

E        No                    4               No

B        No                    2               No

The restaurant is tucked down a Melbourne inner city laneway and has a really nice ambiance to it. The service was great and it was very busy on a Wednesday night but the food was such a let down.

We couldn’t work out how it had such great reviews and put it down to the tourist crowd. There are a lot better steaks restaurants around, which are better value for money.
