JAR-FED FIFTY !

Here it is our FIFTH blog post !! Two years and 50 fabulous dinner dates together we decided to celebrate with people who had joined us along the way and make a night out at Hawker Hall on Chapel Street! Sister restaurant to one of our all time favourite places Chin Chin.

When we started Jar-Fed two years ago we didn’t know how long it would go for or what delicious dinners we would enjoy along the way but we’ve had a ball trying out new places around Melbourne, getting out of our comfort zones and trying new dishes and discovering new favourties we would have never gone too.

Looking forward to the next 50 dinner dates together!

FOOD

As we were a group at Hawker Hall we had the “Feed Me” menu which truly is a feed me experience!

DISH ONE: Beer Food – Nyonya style fried popcorn chicken

img_3732

A great start to the night, the chicken had a delicious crisp batter which went fabulously with the dipping sauce, Yummo!

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         Yes                 10             Yes

B         Yes                 10             Yes

DISH TWO: Dumplings & Buns – Prawn & ginger dumpling with soy & black vinegar caramel

img_3733

The sauce with the dumplings was delicious and sweet, the slight let down for the dumplings was the thicker dough, they were not as delicate as some of the china town dumplings.

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         Yes                 8                Yes

B         Yes                 8                Yes

DISH THREE: Satay BBQ – Beef with peanut sauce

img_3734

The beef was beautiful and tender, it is just Elaine’s personal preference that satay sauce be served with chicken over beef, she felt the spices in the peanut sauce distracted your taste buds from the overall peanut flavour. I thought it was delicious and got top marks!

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         Yes                 7                Yes

B         Yes                10               Yes

DISH FOUR: Coconut BBQ Pit – Otak Otak – Salmon in banana leaf with fragrant indian curry & coconut

img_3736

This won best dish of the night! It was a complete crowd favourite! Wowee what a flavour explosion! It was fantastic in every way! Wonder if they deliver this on uber eats….

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         Yes                10.5             Yes

B         Yes                10                Yes

DISH FIVE: Rice – Special fried rice

img_3735

The fried rice has a great balance of flavours, who doesn’t love fried rice?! Not a dish you would run back for but something you’d probably order as a banquet and you wouldn’t be disappointed.

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         Yes                 8               Yes

B         Yes                 9               Yes

DISH SIX: Rice – Hainanese BBQ Chicken, rice, bok choy & chilli sauce

img_3737

These noodles had a bit of a kick to them! POW! just the right amount of chilli and spice to make an impact.

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         No                 9.5             Yes

B        No                  10              Yes

DISH SEVEN: Coconut BBQ pit – Chicken tikka with coconut yoghurt, chilli & lemon

img_3738

The chicken was moist and tender and had a great flavour, something pretty different and unique.

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         No                 10              Yes

B         No                 7                No

DISH EIGHT: Salads – BBQ Pork & Lychee Salad

img_3739

It was nice to have a fresh dish that was crisp on your palate but the pork in the salad was a bit of a let down, it was a bit overcooked and dry. As I said on the night with 18 dishes they can’t all be a perfect 10!

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         No                  5                No

B        Yes                  6                No

DISH NINE: Greens – Green beans, sweet soy & toasted coconut cashew

img_3740

Tasty way of getting in some greens for the night!

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         No                   7               No

B         No                  9                Yes

DISH TEN: Stir Fry – Sticky soy & black vinegar pork belly with gai lan & red chilli

img_3742

This dish polarized the crowd, people either loved it or didn’t, some thought it was too salty or sour and others loved it! I was in the love it camp, not usually the biggest pork belly fan I found this to be cooked to perfection and the meat was fantastic.

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E        Yes                  7                No

B         No                 10               Yes

DISH ELEVEN: Curries – Malay coconut beef randang

img_3741

This was a close second for best dish of the night! Wow this is a dish you would definitely go back for, the top two were hard to pick, this is super tasty!

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         Yes                 10              Yes

B         Yes                 11              Yes

DISH TWELVE: Curries – Fragrant curry of chickpeas & vegetables with cumin yoghurt

img_3743

Another favourite dish for the night! It was delicious however Elaine and I felt like it wasn’t something we would order over other dishes.

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

B          No                  8               No

DISH THIRTEEN: Greens – Steamed broccoli with braised shiitake & oyster sauce

img_3744

By the time we got this we were getting too full to enjoy it! Elaine felt like it was a sauce she could make at home so wasn’t special.

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E          No                  4               No

B         Yes                  8               Yes

SWEETS

DISH ONE: sticky red date pudding with coconut caramel

img_3745

The coconut caramel icecream was a massive hit around the table! Everyone seemed to love that more than the stick date itself. The sticky date was good but we’ve definitely had better, maybe it was the red date substitute we didn’t like as much.

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         Yes                 9               Yes

B         Yes                 7               Yes

DISH TWO: Milo dinosaur sundae with chocolate biscuit

img_3746

YUM! I think the Australian’s will be nostalgic about the Milo! I don’t know if the Irish were as keen on the icecream!

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E          No                 8               No

B         Yes                 9               Yes

DISH THREE: Roti apple pie with burnt caramel icecream

img_3747

This was loved around the table! Elaine wasn’t a big fan of the burnt caramel icecream but together they were great!

          Usually            Score          Order

          Order?              /10          Again?

E         Yes                 7.5             Yes

B         Yes                 10              Yes
