Mahjong is a cool space on Fitzroy Street, recommended to the Jar by our good friend Brian. He had been and said the mandarin beef was a must have dish so we were making sure we got to try that! We’ve learnt over the years that when we go to a place we must have the recommended dishes to make the experience more special and so we can judge a place on their best!

There doesn’t seem to be as many Chinese places around but Mahjong is a taste of “Regional signatures from across China or the Xiao Chi ‘bar eats’ menu” so we were pretty excited to see what was on offer!

STEAMED DIM SUM

#6 – Scallop and prawn dumplings

img_4227

Dumplings are one thing from China that Melbourne has adopted well! but you can get some bad ones, I thought these were stand out, I loved that you got a whole scallop on top of each that was a nice touch. Elaine thought she had better dumplings at other places, she thought the covering was a bit thicker and not as delicate as it should be.

#9 – Duck wontons in sweet chilli sauce

Delicious! There was just the right touch of chilli sauce which wasn’t too overpowering. The wonton wraps weren’t chewy and the duck inside was perfect. Not something we would normally order but we defiantly would again.

SIDE

#1 – dandan noodle (Szechuan hawker style spicy chicken noodle)

img_4225

The spicy noodles isn’t something we would normally order but we both loved them! they weren’t too spicy just a good kick but you could still taste everything they didn’t burn off your tastebuds! Something a little bit different and was great to add a noodle dish to the night.

‘Xiao Chi’ BITS & PIECES

#5 – Beijing duck pancake with cucumber and SP. onion

img_4226

We both love peking duck! however we both agreed that we do like to roll our own and therefore put as much or as little sauce as we like inside the pancake, we actually had to order extra sauce, maybe we just like a lot?! who knows! they were delicious though and we rated them high!

Recommended Dish

Crispy coated Mandarin beef

The recommended dish!! It didn’t disappoint, crispy beef, a little sticky and very flavoursome! It was delicious and didn’t taste at all oily or fatty, very clean in your mouth! We too would recommend.

WOW the smell when you walk into this place, AMAZING!! One of the best smelling restaurants we have been too! It just lures you in off the street and was a great start to the evening!

The service was fantastic all meals come out as they are ready but we weren’t too bombarded with everything at once, which is always nice! Everything was super fresh straight from the kitchen! We will definitely be back, and to top it off, great value for money!
