$$ The Last Jar, 616 Elizabeth St, Melbourne

The Last Jar is an Irish pub at the top of the city, Elaine had been for a few drinks at some stage and thought it would be cute to put some Irish food into our quest! We were excited to see if there was some traditional Irish fair in Melbourne.

Réamhchursai & Béilí beaga

#5 – Queenscliff Calamari & Wild Mushroom Broth
Scallions, silverbeet, buckwheat, dill oil

The calamari itself was cooked to perfection not chewy at all, it melting in your mouth, absolutely delicious. The sauce and accompaniments around the dish let it down it was a little bland, just had no pop or wow factor at all, Elaine described the dish as a bit “healthy” something you would make to have at home not out for dinner.

Príomhchúrsaí & Ón gualachghriollta

#7 – 300g Marinated Skirt Steak

This wasn’t a steak we usually order but I have had it at slow cooked Argentinian restaurants and its been delicious! The sauce was yum, it had a bit of a kick and it was a good share size however it would have been better if the steak was thinly sliced because it can be a bit chewy.

White fish pie

Golden puff pastry crust, iceberg and scallion salad

The fish dish we rolled was unavailable on the night so we went an alternative the fish pie, we were expecting creamy white sauce filled with lots of fish and calamari but this just didn’t deliver, there was hardly any sauce, it was rather bland, the pasty was yum but who doesn’t like pastry! the filling is what should have had us wanting more.

The Last Jar is very quaint and a cool pub to go and catch up with friends for a few drinks, it isn’t somewhere we would recommend for food or rush back too, unless you lived in the area and wanted a quick bite, you wouldn’t travel into Melbourne like we did for the food.
